Playlist for a 15 Hour Flight to Ethiopia: Coldplay

In Music, Playlist for a 15 Hour Flight to Ethiopia on June 11, 2010 at 2:28 pm

Coldplay is one of my favorite groups and the Strawberry Swing video is absolutely one of my favorite music videos of all time. Because I’m so bad at it, attention to detail is one of the things i appreciate most about artists and this video is full of it.

enjoy.

Playlist for a 15 Hour Flight to Ethiopia: Kanye West

In Music, Playlist for a 15 Hour Flight to Ethiopia on June 10, 2010 at 1:00 pm

now. understand, i have been a kanye fan since day one. and when he came out w 808’s and heartbreak and everyone was off him, i was still true blue. ive been an avid reader of his blog since he started it and when he changed it’s site location recently, along w the general content (from an all-forms-of-art-and-beautiful-wonderful-creative-things blog to what now seems like a nothing-but-hypsersexualized-photographs-of-white-women blog) well my faith cracked slightly. BUT, as if reading me and only me, before i could consider joining the naysayers kanye releases the new tracks from his upcoming album and BOY AM I STOKED. as he shared on his blog, EVERYONE’s stoked for what their hailing the return of kanye. demolition time. only sad thing about my approaching departure to the motherland- i probably wont hear all the new hot fire he releases until im back. sour.

Bill Plympton is the King of Animation.

In Artsy Fartsy, History, Music on June 10, 2010 at 12:44 pm

took an animation class my senior year in highschool and the first, and last, thing we did that semester was watch a plympton anthology. the mans like animation 101. below is a clip from his anthology, two of his commercials and the heard ’em say video he did for kanye west. like ive said time and time again, kanye is an artist in every sense of the term. the man knows his stuff. so its no surprise he knew to get plympton. anyone who’s ever taken a drawing class knows how incredibly talented, and dedicated, this man MUST be. in.cray.ee.blay.

saw them on one of the many late night talk shows a couple of years ago. cool kids. any america’s next top model fans should see a familiar face in the first video. and anyone who’s seen Rachel Getting Married should recognize the lead singer as the groom. random, this i know.

Takashi Murakami Superflat Monogram for Louis Vuitton

In Artsy Fartsy, Fashion, Movies on June 10, 2010 at 11:50 am

many of you may remember Takashi Murakami for his out of nowhere revamp of the classic louis vuitton monogram, or for the international museum tour of his paintings and life size figurines ¬†which brought more celebrities to the opening nights of an exhibit than…idk, but it was more than usual. whatever. anyway his work is awesome (despite contestations that his paintings are really done by apprentices and understudies). i remember seeing the show when it came to LA in ’08 and feeling like he’d managed to invent not only a new way of painting, but new colors to paint with as well. good stuff. anyway here’s an animated short he did in the spirit of his work for louis v. those who’ve seen Hayo Miyazaki‘s Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, & Ponyo may feel a little tingle of remembrance watching this.

In Music, Playlist for a 15 Hour Flight to Ethiopia on June 10, 2010 at 11:30 am

according to my friend maibi, Nneka’s pretty great. i’d attribute his opinion to some naija bias for the artist however she did score a j.period mixtape aaannnddd from what i’ve read is prreettyyy critically acclaimed, not to mention she iiiisss currently on tour w NaS & Damian Marley sooooo, i mean i suppose she actually might be pretty great. liking what im hearing so far, im convinced enough to put her on the playlist + how could you not love that nigerian accent??

Playlist for a 15 Hour Flight to Ethiopia: Celia Cruz

In Music, Playlist for a 15 Hour Flight to Ethiopia on June 10, 2010 at 11:08 am

got the celia cruz album during spring break from a great guy named fred. fred is a friend to me all my homies. he’s our supplier and we’re his happy customers. he feeds, quite shamelessly, our addiction to huge, gaudy, african jewelry with his hand painted, hand crafted kenyan designs and we, like junkies, visit him regularly, happy and itching with excitement at the site of his pure goods. anyway, we went in one day and started talking to him about the aawweessoommee music accompanying our shopping experience and he, like a true friend, lent us his original, and only, copy of the Celia Cruz “Mi Vida Es Cantar” album, in full confidence that we’d return, which we will, cause fred’s our friend.
